The Tropical Diaspora Event Archive – From Squats to Printed History

Here you'll find the documented history: every flyer, every lineup, every event from 2003 onward, starting with our first official parties at Kaffee Burger Tantzwirtschaft.

But the story starts earlier—in the illegal basement of Freitagsbar in Berlin-Mitte, where regular parties filled squatted houses with tropical sound long before we had a name. Back then, there were no DJ names. There were no flyers. There was only the music—and two figures at the door working as bouncers: DJ Garrincha and Dr. Sócrates, holding space for what was yet to come.

Meanwhile, the roots were spreading. Dr. Sócrates moved through the squat scenes of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg—at places like Fishladen in Friedrichshain—carrying the rhythm through other districts, other houses, other nights. And in Prenzlauer Berg, at EKA Bar, DJ Garrincha had already begun his journey as a resident, shaping the sound that would one day find its name.

In 2013, we found that name: Tropical Diaspora. But the rhythm had been moving through Berlin since the days of Freitagsbar, Fishladen and EKA Bar. This archive traces that rhythm from the undocumented underground to the printed page.
