With a repertoire that rescues and preserves the roots of samba soul and funk, the band studied the language of these styles and shows, through its own compositions and its history.

The idea for the CD started when vocalist Fred Jorge and bassist Mário Porto reactivated the musical partnership started with the recording in 1999 of the CD by the band Big Muff. The initial idea of going back to the roots of black Brazilian music turned into a great deal of research into the style. The danceable mixture of samba and soul music created by Tim Maia was the starting point for understanding the origin of the bridge between Brazilian music and North American music (Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, George Clinton, Sly Stone, etc.). From then on, the search for instruments that were used at the time began and that would give the album a sound close to the old productions. The battery used was a Ludwig 1975, donated by drummer and collector of rare batteries Laercio Junior. Fender and Gibson guitars and vintage amplifiers came from guitarist biLê and friends Ricky Furlani and Pedro Piazzi. The big and purposeful difference from the old productions is that all this equipment was captured digitally. All available technology was used sparingly to give the album a unique sound. The search for a new concept and musical language for the style came from this alchemy between the ancient and the modern.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0536/8063/6098/files/Cover_FredJorgeMaiorais_2000x-Digital_v3.png?v=1754158564
banda-jardes-nego-vem-samba-remaster
Banda Jardes (Nego Vem Sambá) [Remastered] (Digital Platforms, Bandcamp)

Available in all digital platforms and for download here.

Banda Jardes • Grilos Da Vida (Nego Vem Sambá)

In memory of Reginaldo Laurindo da Silva aka Antônio Regis aka Regis Moreno

São Paulo – ★ 13.06.1951 – † 06.09.2022

What is Grilos Da Vida?

“Grilos Da Vida (Nego Vem Sambá)” by Banda Jardes – 1976 original Samba Rock from the district of Guaianases in São Paulo – Brazil.

There are many stories around this record and, in São Paulo, in the vinyl shops everybody knows the record which is almost impossible to find. After a long illness (António) Regis Moreno passed away in São Paulo. Regis was one of the greatest representatives of samba-rock, the musical blend of samba, funk and rock that has come to characterize a specific time in Brazilian popular music. Having emerged from the poor black peripheries of the city, Regis could fill with his band Banda Jardes big concert halls in the 1980’s. We at Tropical Diaspora Records had the immense privilege to know Regis and his music firsthand. We published on vinyl a reissue of his massive hit “Grilos da Vida” (today sold-out). “Grilos da Vida” is a song that represents like few others the true spirit of samba-rock with its distinctive guitar take. Regis had the opportunity to enjoy with us the renaissance of his music and further collaborations were planned. Today it is no longer possible. A beautiful soul is gone. Ska the sisters in resistance and class struggle.

You may have heard about it. Since 2012 Frevo has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Frevo of Pernambuco has then got the acknowledgment it deserved, and it came from important international institutions. Thus, it can be celebrated as the incredible legacy that it is. But sorry to disappoint you. Frevo has been recognized for a long time by the people who have contributed to its creation and practice. The UNESCO seal only means the monetization by the elites of Paris, London, Berlin, New York… of a cultural practice that belongs to no one but to the people who nurture it.

Originating in the carnival parades by military bands, the name Frevo means to boil as the frenzied dance makes you boil. But the dance takes from Capoeira the movement as weapon and disguise, because the ones who were boiling in the streets of Pernambuco’s carnival were the unruly masses that come and go without any recognizable direction. There is virtually no popular dance in the world that is not an expression of struggle, a way of carrying out the struggle.

Ska Maria Pastora picks up on the tradition of the Frevo parades and mix it with a walking bass line accented with off beat rhythms, that is, Ska. Frevo and Ska. Ska Maria Pastora shows like no other what means to revisit Ska using Frevo’s harmonies to boil Jamaican Ska with carnival.

Jamaica and Brazil fused in a unique blend. The Brazilian Northeast and the Caribbean, two places that witnessed the first revolutions in modern history: the revolutions of the Maroons. Often described as groups of runaway slaves they were authentic people’s revolutions as in the case of the great Zumbi dos Palmares, the quilombola leader who helped create an imaginary of resistance and struggle that continues today. One of the high points of the black revolutions in the territories now known as the Americas was the revolution in the French colony of Saint-Domingue led by Toussaint Louverture that gave rise to the independent state of Haiti, a revolution that shook the foundations of the French metropolis Paris. Never forget these stories when listening to the brass section of Ska Maria Pastora: the marching of the Maroons.

In the conflicts to control the Atlantic slave trade and the profitable sugar plantations used as extermination camps of the black population, the Dutch West India Company arose, which enlightens the history of Pernambuco until the Portuguese elites of Brazil reconquered the enclave. The Dutch burned Olinda, the capital of New Lusitania. But before that, there was the plundering of Recife and Olinda by English privateers and traders. UNESCO declared the colonial heritage of Olinda a World Heritage Site in 1982. A site of shame. Spanish, Portuguese, English and Dutch all were involved in claiming the land that once belonged to the Tupi-Guarani. But sugar was too sweet a commodity for the colonialists’ pockets to let the profits from the trade go away. The modern history of Northeast Brazil begins here, with extermination camps, mass genocide and imperial powers fighting each other for control of the sugar production that first invaded European aristocratic society and later served as the main source of energy for the impoverished working classes that populated the factories of the industrial revolution that would further impoverish the Global South.

Primitive accumulation began in places like Pernambuco and styles like Frevo mean the creative resistance of the populations in their fight for sovereignty. As it is with Ska, which grew as a combination of Caribbean Mento and Calypso with Afro-American Jazz and New Orleans rhythms. Later, Ska developed into Reggae, another Intangible Culture Heritage named by the neocolonialists of UNESCO. But Reggae and Ska do not need recognition by any elitist international body, since they have become true international rhythms of global south peoples. It could have happened with Frevo too, but the British Empire has always been keener on exporting its colonial goods like it exploited West-Indian workforce to fuel its industrial complex in Great Britain. What they did not see coming was the alliance between emigrants from the colonies and British working-class kids that gave birth to the skinhead subculture against racial prejudice.

The destinies of the peoples of the Global South intersect in rhythms such as Ska and Frevo, which become anthems of true internationalism.

Edited by Dr.Sócrates

<div style="--awb-font-size: 50px; Everyone was looking at Africa for inspiration especially in the music and words of Fela Kuti, the great Nigerian musician who fathered Afrobeat from West Africa’s Highlife and the Afro-American funk that he encountered after being in contact with the Black Panthers in the US. In the West, the independent music scene was in crisis, and Afrobeat seemed to offer a good opportunity to redeem Western musicians who, before an empty and depoliticized present, thought that ‘becoming Africans’ could gave them a surplus much needed in the industry. The great drummer and composer of Africa ’70, Tony Allen began touring around, appearing in every festival in the West, and collaborating in every new record made. Some bands began to include musicians from the African diaspora who were used to legitimize the bands as a colorful extra and helped to authenticate rhythms and lyrics. Afrobeat was everywhere. It came from the West and reclaimed some glorious past lost in the ‘darkness’ of African history. In countries like Brazil, but also in the US, Afrobeat served for the (white) elites to discovered the African heritage without having to feel uncomfortable about it. It is a very strange thing if we consider that Brazil has the second largest black population in the world. This is appropriation. But Höröya has taken a different path. The band from São Paulo does not imitate Afrobeat or Afrojazz. It makes a conscious use of these. In the context of race and class segregation that shapes Brazilian social life, it becomes a political stance. Its front man, André Piruka knows very well what means to be Afro-Brazilian today. His musical compositions, his use of the African instruments and rhythms, show a deep respect and understanding of a cultural tradition that differs from certain stereotypes that still shape the way how Brazil understands its relation to Africa, despite that Africa has dramatically shaped the Brazilian musical culture for centuries. The music created by the African diaspora in Brazil, and everywhere too, has been the result of a collective struggle carried out in the most inhumane conditions. Its survival talks about the resilience of thousands of women and men at the moment of their extermination. Any use, performance, rework or reinterpretation of this musical heritage need to have it in mind. So, it is with Höröya, and many other bands in Brazil, that make use of Afrobeat departing from the slums of their own reality.

It is exceptional, and one of its greatest achievements, that Höröya does not resort to those stereotyped and fossilized forms of Afrobeat that were current some years ago. Höröya takes the conscious choice of going back to Africa, of working with the masters, and of bringing Africa back to Brazil. It creates a mixture that addresses today’s Diaspora, the reality of economic and social displacement of contemporary Africans in Brazil. The name of the album, GRI GRI BA, means in Malinke the great spell, the great sorcerer… and so it works the music that conspires to bring back to Brazil its own heritage and revive its own past, the very foundations of its culture. This is a dialectical trick. Because, the very strangeness of the music in today’s Brazilian cultural hype makes plain the cultural alienation of Brazilian society. Being African in today’s Brazil still means resistance and resilience, and Höröya has been able to create the soundtrack of this reality.

Edited by Dr.Sócrates.

Disclaimer: The images shown are for illustration and mock-up purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0536/8063/6098/files/Cover-TDR012-FRONT-2000px-100x-v1_8a331353-27e1-4bf4-a365-5e8b985c7c0c.jpg?v=1776685729
dub-manual-levante
DUB MANUAL - Levante! It began with the march of the maroons. When ska slows down into its most extreme form, as it is dub, the music stretches its bass line to cover more land, as to create an invisible wall that threatens the ship in the horizon. The sound system is magical, its sound is allurement. It can only be heard by the slaves that populate the colonial ship. The sound system drives them to rebellion and the ship sinks while the brothers and sisters get into the shores of the new land. The lyrics speak of leaving the house unprotected, facing countless hardships (perrengues), and enduring on faith alone against the torment of an empty stomach.

Yet, “Tempo” is ultimately a song of hope and forward motion. It’s a message of unification, preparation, and healing wounds of the past, urging listeners to believe in the next step.

Musically, Sanzyo Rafael (Dub Manual) masterfully frames Romariz's poignant performance within a heavy, processed dubscape.
