Orquestra Backstage: Where Northeast Brazil Meets the World

Blending the regional sounds of Brazil’s Northeast with global rhythms—that’s the mission of Orquestra Backstage. Formed in 2008 among a group of friends united by their love for diverse genres—from frevo, forró, and baião to reggae, rock, jazz, samba, Afrobeat, and blues—the band has carved a unique sonic identity.

Armed with their “matulão” (a traditional straw basket) overflowing with musical fusion, Backstage stormed the streets of Pernambuco’s Carnival, delivering a one-of-a-kind repertoire. At first, their 70s-inspired rock cascaded down Olinda’s hills dressed in frevo’s vibrant energy, rainbow umbrellas in hand. Crowds erupted, mesmerized by this new way to dance—the frevo-rock of Backstage.

The band became a bridge, connecting rock enthusiasts with Pernambuco’s street Carnival through electrifying interactivity. As their sound evolved, Afrobeat legends like Fela Kuti and Mulatu Astatke collided with the maracatu of Chico Science and Nação Zumbi, all woven into the fabric of Pernambuco’s frevo. Their goal isn’t just to reproduce music, but to ignite a dialogue between global sounds and the raw, pulsating rhythms of their homeland.

Composed of seasoned professionals who’ve shared stages with Brazil’s finest, Orquestra Backstage is now preparing to record an album of original music—fusing these influences into songs that make the crowd frever (a play on frevo + “to fervor”). Stay tuned: the world’s rhythms are about to dance like never before.

Orquestra Backstage: O Encontro da Música Nordestina com o Mundo

Unir a música regional do Nordeste com os ritmos do mundo. Esse é o DNA da Orquestra Backstage, que surgiu em 2008 no meio de um grupo de amigos apaixonados por gêneros tão diversos quanto frevo, forró, reggae, baião, xote, xaxado, coco, samba, maracatu, rock, jazz, MPB e blues.

Dessa fusão, a Backstage encheu seu matulão de sonoridades e invadiu as ruas do Carnaval pernambucano com um repertório único. No início, foi o rock dos anos 70 que desceu as ladeiras de Olinda vestido de frevo, sombrinha colorida na mão. O público pirou com essa nova forma de dançar — o frevo-rock da Backstage.

A Orquestra criou uma ponte entre os amantes do rock e o Carnaval de rua de Pernambuco, numa interação que virou marca registrada. Com o tempo, o Afrobeat de Fela Kuti e Mulatu Astatke entrou em cena, misturando-se ao maracatu de Chico Science e ao frevo tradicional. A proposta? Não só reproduzir música, mas fazer os ritmos do mundo conversarem com a batida pulsante do Nordeste.

Formada por músicos profissionais que já acompanham grandes artistas do estado, a Backstage agora prepara seu próximo passo: um álbum autoral, onde todas essas influências se encontram pra fazer o povo “frever”.
