Hello Tropicalistas, “Children of Hannibal” when we talk about music can have only one meaning and come from italian “Figli di Annibale” the first EP of the Italian band Almamegretta, recorded and mixed fom September 15, 1992 to September 19, 1992 and published in 1993. This was the beginning and in the middle of the 90ties as i came to Germany as an immigrant a good Italian friend in that time gave me the Almamegretta CD with the title Animamigrante. This sound track escort me for many years in Berlin and then again in Brazil where I borrowed it to a friend and finally never became it again.
In the Tropical Diaspora Vol.31 where we had the pleasure to have an old Friend and known DJ in the city i am talking about Don Rispeto, he had that Album in his vinyl case an i decide to find that album to have it again in my collection. So this week i got again in my hands and could hear the sound not from the CD but from the original vinyl with a great organic sound coming from the boxes.
A very special feature in this record are the texts showing attention to issues such as the multicultural society, war, and social problems of the South in Italy. A strong characteristic in the album is the use of the Neapolitan dialect and its merger with the electronic sounds and with Arab, African and dub / reggae. As foreign and immigrant in Europe taking into account what the EU do in this very moment with immigrants i can assure you that Almamegretta is more actual then ever notwithstanding that this album was published exactly 21 years ago.
