Dear Tropical Diaspora friends,

We are approaching the date of our month’s party with the Berlin-based outstanding bands La Mula Santa and Musicalle Cholo Orchestra. On Friday 28 at Yaam-Berlin, we are up to it!

Now, let us talk about roots music, as the supposedly modern experts of electronic music call it. But you already know what is all about. There is world, ethnic, indigenous, roots, traditional… music and Music, that of the white male from the western civilization. Anyway, what about Chicha? Chicha is this amazing blend of Cumbia made by those indigenous, roots, traditional… musicians of Peru, coming from the high altitude of the Andean regions and the forests of the tropical Amazonian basin.

What makes Chicha so special is its original blend of psychedelic guitars with traditional rhythms. “La Chichera” – “The Chicha Seller” by Los Demonios del Mantaro (The Devils of Mantaro) in 1965 is considered to be the first of its class. Fusing in a rather unorthodox manner the popular Andean music Huayno (Wayñu in Quechua and Aymara) with Cumbia and jazzy elements, “La Chichera” immediately became one of the first truly Chicha hits.

After the success of bands like Los Demonios del Mantaro or Los Demonios de Corocochay in the 1960s, Chicha experienced its triumph. Many well-known bands like Los Desellos have shaped now this eclectic sound that enjoys today a worldwide audience.

Initiators of the “Poder Verde” (“Green Power”) movement Los Mirlos made their debut in 1973 with their characteristic hypnotic sounds and exuberant guitars. Full of fantasy the music of Los Mirlos seems “to originate from the heart of the jungle itself”, write Santiago Alfaro and Alfredo Villar, becoming their melodies popular not only in Peru but well across the Latin American continent.

Los Mirlos

Los Mirlos recorded their amazing “Lamento en la selva” in 1974. It will, for sure, at Tropical Diaspora next Friday.

Enjoy it!
