Honoring the Legacy of Reginaldo Laurindo da Silva: Samba-Rock Legend & Frontman of Banda Jardes
São Paulo, Brazil / Berlin, Germany – The global music community mourns the passing of Reginaldo Laurindo da Silva (★ 13.06.1951 – † 06.09.2022), known to many as Antônio Regis or Regis Moreno, the iconic voice behind Banda Jardes and composer of the legendary samba-rock anthem "Grilos da Vida (Nego Vem Sambá)". A pioneer of Brazil’s Black periphery sound, Reginaldo’s music transcended borders, leaving an eternal imprint on dance floors and hearts worldwide.
As DJ Dr. Sócrates poignantly wrote upon his passing: "A gem is gone. In memory of Reginaldo Laurindo Da Silva aka Antônio Regis aka Regis Moreno. The composer of Grilos Da Vida (Nego Vem Sambá) and front man of the Banda Jardes featured in this record. After a long illness (António) Regis Moreno passed away in São Paulo. Regis was one of the greatest representatives of samba-rock, the musical blend of samba, funk and rock that has come to characterize a specific time in Brazilian popular music."
A Friendship That Shaped a Musical Movement
The story of Banda Jardes and Tropical Diaspora Records is deeply intertwined with a decades-long bond between Reginaldo and DJ Garrincha. Their connection began in 1993, long before Garrincha became a DJ or founded his label. At just 17 years old, Garrincha met Reginaldo while both were working in São Paulo’s IT sector—a humble beginning for what would become a lifelong artistic kinship.
Back then, Reginaldo shared vivid stories of Banda Jardes’ heyday in the 1980s, when they ruled São Paulo’s samba-rock scene, fusing funk, soul, and rock into an electrifying Brazilian sound. Little did Garrincha know that years later, he would migrate to Berlin, launch the legendary Tropical Diaspora party at YAAM (2005), and eventually establish Tropical Diaspora Records (2015)—all while keeping Reginaldo’s music alive in his DJ sets.
The Resurrection of "Grilos da Vida"
In 2015, fate brought them back together when DJ Garrincha met Reginaldo in São Paulo to secure the only existing copy of the ultra-rare original 1976 pressing of "Grilos da Vida". Reginaldo entrusted his prized vinyl to Garrincha under one condition: it was on loan strictly for remastering, ensuring his music would be preserved authentically.
The reissue became a cult hit, selling out swiftly and reintroducing Banda Jardes to a new generation. Plans for remixes, edits, and future collaborations were in motion—until Reginaldo’s passing in 2022. Yet his spirit lives on through the music, the label, and the dance floors that still move to "Grilos da Vida."
A Legend’s Farewell, A Legacy That Endures
Reginaldo’s story is one of resilience, passion, and underground triumph—a voice from São Paulo’s periphery that echoed across the world. His music, once nearly lost to bootleggers and the Tietê River, now stands immortalized, thanks to the dedication of those who believed in its power.
DJ Garrincha & Tropical Diaspora Records vow to keep the flame of samba-rock burning, honoring Reginaldo’s memory through future releases, edits, and the eternal groove of "Grilos da Vida."
Rest in Rhythm, Regis. Your sound is forever.
