Echoes of a Forgotten Number: ‘Menino 23’ and the Rhythm of Resistance

Echoes of a Forgotten Number: ‘Menino 23’ and the Rhythm of Resistance

There are stories that live in the grooves of history; buried, scratched, almost silent. And then, someone comes along with a needle and the will to listen. That someone is our friend and collaborator, the visionary director behind the gut-wrenching documentary Menino 23: Infâncias Perdidas no Brasil.

Here at Tropical Diaspora Records, we don’t just collect sounds. We collect memories, struggles, and the ghost notes of the African diaspora. That’s why we are beyond proud to announce that we are working personally with the filmmaker on a very special vinyl project; one that will give this story the analog permanence it deserves.

The Film You Need to See

If you haven’t watched Menino 23 yet, prepare to have your soul rearranged. The film uncovers a brutal, almost unbelievable chapter of Brazilian history: in the 1930s, on a farm in Rio de Janeiro, dozens of black orphaned children were stripped of their names and reduced to numbers. They were victims of eugenicist experiments, inspired by the Nazi and Fascist regimes that the local elite openly admired.

Only one; Boy 23; survived long enough to tell the tale.

The documentary is not an easy watch. It’s a mirror held up to Brazil’s deep cuts of racism, oligarchic violence, and the silencing of black childhood. But it is also an act of rescue, a sonic and visual excavation that pulls truth from the mud of forgetting.

Why Vinyl? Why Us?

At Tropical Diaspora Records, we believe that certain stories demand a physical form. Streaming is water; vinyl is earth. When we sat down with the director (yes, the same one who dug through archives and wept with survivors), we knew we had to create an object that mirrored the film’s weight and beauty.

Our project will include:

  • A curated soundtrack of archival sounds, field recordings, and original compositions that evoke the era’s Afro-Brazilian resistance.

  • Extended interviews and historian annotations pressed as bonus tracks.

  • Artwork inspired by the “numbers” and the rural landscape of that terrible farm; transformed into a symbol of remembrance.

Working side by side with the director has been a masterclass in ethical storytelling. He doesn’t exploit pain; he orchestrates it into a tool for justice.

From Screen to Turntable

This vinyl is not merchandise. It’s a memorial. Just as Boy 23 survived to turn his number back into a name, we want every spin of this record to be an act of naming the unnamed.

We will launch a limited pressing later this year. But before the needle drops, your first step is to watch Menino 23.

Then come back to us. Let’s talk about Brazil’s lost boys, the rhythm of resistance, and why some stories are too heavy for digital clouds.
