Throwing Shapes
It took time to find the perfect venue for the first-ever Throwing Shapes party but the wait is finally over.
Introducing Throwing Shapes Sunday Sessions at @ysy.berlin - a daytime dance series where artists are invited to share a part of themselves and their stories through records. These aren’t club sets, they’re extended storytelling sessions that will have you throwing shapes!
I’m thrilled to be joined for this first session by @dj_garrincha from Tropical Diaspora Records and @anissacarrington.
@tropical_diaspora_records began as an event series aimed at creating space for cross-cultural connection and storytelling through sound. It has since grown into an independent vinyl label dedicated to preserving the musical legacies of migration, resistance, and survival. DJ Garrincha will perform an extended, vinyl-only set showcasing the roots and sound of TDR. There’ll also be a TDR record stand where you can pick up their releases and learn more about the artists they support.
Nissa Carrigan is a selector, DJ, and founding member of the SLIC Unit DJ network, as well as the host of one of my favourite radio shows, MUSIC CITY on @refugeworldwide. Heavily influenced by her rich musical upbringing, Nissa will play an extended set full of soul, disco, funk, and hip-hop, offering insight into the records that raised her.
Entry to the party is donation-based, starting at 2€. All door proceeds go directly to the artists.
The clouds are clearing and the sun is back, so make sure to come down for the perfect summer Sunday dance!
Throwing Shapes is never for profit. Always for the people.
