Tropical Diaspora Records® Announces Film Score Production for Award-Winning Short Film "Mångata - The Road to the Moon"

Berlin, São Paulo – Tropical Diaspora Records® is proud to announce its collaboration with director Maja Costa, having produced the original film score for the poignant and critically acclaimed short film, Mångata - The Road to the Moon.

The film, a powerful allegory on the trauma and resilience of immigrants, follows Alya, a woman who travels from Africa to Europe following a dream first held by her father. The title, Mångata (a Swedish word for the glimmering, road-like reflection of the moon on water), symbolizes the long and perilous journey toward a better life. The score, composed and produced by the Tropical Diaspora team, serves as an emotional anchor, moving between themes of profound loss, cosmic wonder, and ultimate catharsis.

Director Maja Costa’s vision directly confronts the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean. "It is difficult to look away from the moon shining in the starry sky, but looking away is what we do as we turn toward the tragic reality of immigration to Europe," states Costa. "Their basic human right to a home often goes unfulfilled and their search for a place to 'feel at home' becomes an existential struggle. This is not just an African problem; it is the responsibility of all of Europe."

Tropical Diaspora Records® was tasked with translating this weighty narrative into a sonic landscape. The score needed to reflect the dualities present in the film: the intimate personal trauma of the protagonist, Alya, and the vast, impersonal scale of space and sea she must navigate. The music seamlessly blends ethereal, atmospheric textures with poignant melodic themes, guiding the audience through Alya’s journey from the depths of loss to a place of healing and understanding.

"We were deeply moved by Maja's powerful statement and the film's urgent message," said a spokesperson for Tropical Diaspora Records®. "Our approach was to create a score that feels both intimate and epic—a sound that embodies the quiet desperation of the journey across the sea, the awe-inspiring isolation of space, and the fragile hope of finding a place to call home. It’s a score about memory, dreams, and the unbreakable human spirit."

Mångata - The Road to the Moon has begun its festival run, already garnering attention for its breathtaking visuals, compelling narrative, and evocative score.
