Bugiganga Tropical Vol.2 brings reggae, cumbia, and hip-hop into conversation with Maya-language rap. Doctor Nativo joins forces with Tzutu Kan on “Guatemaya,” pairing contemporary rhythms with Indigenous language, identity, and resistance.

7″ vinyl · 45 rpm · Catalog number TDR01
Two separate sleeves, plus a lyrics sleeve with Maya lyrics and Spanish translations.

Side A: Guatemaya
Side B: Sabrosura

The music

Rooted in Guatemala, Doctor Nativo blends reggae, cumbia, and hip-hop with Mayan cosmovision. On “Guatemaya,” Tzutu Kan delivers verses in Tz’utuhil Maya, placing language and cultural memory at the heart of the groove.

Produced by Ivan Duran, with recording and mixing by Ivan Duran and Al Oviedo, this release connects the rhythms of Guatemala and Belize with the wider sounds of the diaspora.

A Botany of Resistance

Bugiganga Tropical is the four-volume 7″ collection from which Tropical Diaspora Records grew. Each volume pairs music with a plant linked to the African diaspora in the Americas: a living symbol of memory, labor, survival, and rhythm.

With cover design by Matthias Beck, Volume 2 continues that botanical thread. The enclosed lyrics sleeve brings the words closer, in Maya and Spanish translation.
