What If? Life Is A Dream by Etuk Ubong

Pre-Order & Release Information

[Release Feb.2027]

Nigerian trumpeter, composer and bandleader Etuk Ubong brings his self-defined "Earth Music" to Tropical Diaspora Records. Hailed by Seun Kuti as "one of the best things to come out of Lagos," Ubong weaves Afrobeat, Highlife and Jazz into a single fabric, threading through the ritualistic drumming of Ekombi — propulsive and relentless, yet always carrying his life philosophy of goodwill, peace and love for humanity.

Much of the music is fast-paced and politically charged, particularly on titles such as "African Struggle" and "Mass Corruption," with Ubong featuring on both trumpet and lead vocal, leading a five-piece brass section over a percussion-heavy rhythm section and soulful keys. He uses music to address not only injustice but also humanity and spirituality, most notably on "Spiritual Change," a deep cut on which he reflects on Africans' need for internal change before they can address the surrounding problems.

Born in Akwa Ibom State and raised in Lagos, Ubong picked up the trumpet at 14 and never looked back. Aged just 16 he was recruited into the band of Highlife great Victor Olaiya — the same channel that once passed through a young Fela Kuti and Tony Allen. A fruitful stint with Femi Kuti's Positive Force followed, performing frequently at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, alongside dates with Blue Note-signed South African pianist Nduduzo Makhathini.

In Lagos he launched his own venue, "The Truth," performing three nights a week — the most prolific spot in the Nigerian capital since Fela's Shrine. In London, a mesmerizing session with Steam Down, residencies at Jazz re:freshed and the Royal Festival Hall, and a storming set at Gilles Peterson's inaugural We Out Here Festival have drawn attention to the exciting parallels with the Sons of Kemet lineage — yet Ubong's sound remains distinctly Nigerian.

About Tropical Diaspora Records

Pressed with the highest quality audio in mind, ensuring the urgency, depth and spiritual force of Ubong's "Earth Music" and the incredible musicianship of his band are experienced as intended.

Afro-Diasporic Artistry and the Principles of Tropical Diaspora Records

For Tropical Diaspora Records, releasing Etuk Ubong's music is more than a business decision — it is a profound act of sonic liberation and cultural stewardship. Ubong is an artist who embodies the very principles we champion: he is an agent of his own narrative, a guardian of ancestral memory, and a force for musical innovation rooted in Nigerian experience.

His music connects the dots between Afrobeat, Highlife, jazz and the ritualistic drumming of Ekombi, weaving them into a tapestry that is both deeply rooted and forward-looking. In a world that often tries to define, contain, and commodify diasporic artists, Etuk Ubong expands outward, creating space for urgency, resistance, love, and collective healing.
