Genival Lacerda – Troque as pilhas, só não mate o véio – 1984

Coming back to the record i want to introduce you today, Genival Lacerda a famous forró composer and singer in Brazil born in Camina Grande state of Paraiba, is the artist responsible for several hits in the forró scene like Severina Xique Xique, De quem é esse jegue?, Radinho de Pilha or Mate O Véio Mate. My personally selection from the record in question is Severina Xique Xique, this song first of all bring everybody to dance even when the audience don´t know forró and for my surprise many other guests ask me if this is a special reggae song and this could be true, the song have contagious rhythms.  Campina Grande is not Caruaru almost known in Brasil as the capital of the forró but hosts big forró festival as well, nestled in the rural area of Pernambuco, Caruaru is not only the capital of forró, but can also be remembered for being a great commercial hub and considered by UNESCO as the biggest  “Figurative Arts Center of the Americas”.

In the 50s, he moved to Pernambuco and in 1955 he has recorded his first album of 78 rpm, where the song Coco was a big success. In 1964, encouraged by Jackson do Pandeiro, Genival went to Rio de Janeiro, where he worked in forró houses and reached to record an LP. However, the breakthrough came in 1975 even with the music Severina Xique-Xique, whose verse “he’s eye is in her boutiquebecame the most popular of the composer. Thanks to the composition of his own and João Gonçalves, he sold about 800.000 copies. So witch such number nobody can ignore Genival Lacerda as one of the biggest artists in this genre.

Living in Campina Grande, Paraiba, he still fulfills its touring schedule and is active promoting forró in the whole country, like here in a national tv program for the brazilian roots music “Sr. Brasil”.
